How to Form a Limited Liability Company For Authors

If you've reached the point where you'd like to turn your self-publishing author business into a Limited Liability Company (LLC), then congratulations. That's a big step step forward, and I'm excited for you.

To do this, it's possible to file all the paperwork with your State on your own. This is the cheapest method to form your LLC. You'll only have to pay for various State filing fees. You'll want to be extra careful that everything is filled out and filed correctly. Honestly, this can get tricky. Especially since each State has their own rules.

Fortunately, you don't have to fill out everything yourself or hire a lawyer, though hiring a lawyer is always your safest option. There are several companies that handle filing paperwork for you and even provide registered agent services, such as Northwest Registered Agent. These companies, of course, charge a fee for these services, but they can be rather inexpensive (on the order of $100 with discounts).
